Al servizio di un'agenzia governativa non ufficiale ma molto potente, l'agente K si occupa di tutto ciò che riguarda l'immigrazione e regola l'attività di tutto ciò che è alieno sulla terra. Lavora in segreto ed è sempre vestito di nero. C'è molto da fare, e l'organizzazione decide di dare un aiuto a K. Vengono convocati alcuni giovani in servizio alla polizia di New York e sottoposti ad una serie di prove attitudinali. Ad essere scelto è James Edwards, chiamato J, che all'inizio non capisce in che consista il lavoro e poi capisce che la Terra è infestata da un traffico nascosto di alieni che costituisce una minaccia per l'umanità. Le indagini sulla misteriosa morte di parecchi di questi alieni conducono K e J al laboratorio della dottoressa Laurel Weaver, del dipartimento medico di New York, che, occupandosi dell'autopsia sui cadaveri, fa alcune strane scoperte.
