Note : If you already know this Japanese cyberpunk classic, you know what you're getting and you know why you need it. If you haven't seen it, well, let's just say it's a must see for fans of body horror, experimental film, cyberpunk, industrial music, Japanese salarymen turning into metal monsters with drill dicks, or just general weirdness.
The image quality on this one is pretty good, if not completely clean, and the black level is a little elevated, but it generally looks fine. I chose to encode in a pretty high bitrate because the textures of this film, from the stark, high-contrast 16mm grain to the filmed CRT screen scanlines, are so important, and I wanted to conserve them pristine, and the film is pretty short anyway. There's apparently an Arrow remaster out, but no one seems to have it. When I get ahold of the Arrow version, if it turns out to be significantly better, I'll probably encode that, but this is as good as it gets in the meantime.
