Note : Jaume Balagueró, known for [REC], Sleep Tight, and Darkness, made his little seen feature debut in 1999 with this post-Seven supernatural thriller about a child-murdering cult, based on a Ramsey Campbell novel, one of many foreign films Miramax bought and then sat on. It's wildly ambitious, and goes off the rails a bit, trying to do way too much, but the atmosphere of impending doom is solid, performances are good across the board, the tone is relentlessly bleak, and the images have the same deep, unctuous darkness to them that he used to even better effect in Darkness. Plus, there are a few flashes of some really gnarly practical gore and makeup effects.
Sadly, this seems to be a contemporary telecine transfer, and as such, it doesn't look great, both a little unstable, and with desaturated colors, some visible dust, and signs of sharpening. At least grain and noise are decently managed. Comes with both original Spanish and English dub, but do yourself a favor and watch it with the original audio and English subtitles.
